This Year I’m Excited to be Hosting…
Julie Eshbaugh! Julie is a YA writer and former filmmaker. She made two short films and then spent several years producing an online video series for teens which received several honors from the Webby Awards. Her new YA fantasy, CROWN OF OBLIVION, is coming from HarperTeen this November. She is also the author of IVORY AND BONE (HarperTeen 2016) and OBSIDIAN AND STARS (HarperTeen 2017), a prehistoric fantasy duology.
Get to know Julie more by visiting her on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.

Crown of Oblivion hits shelves November 12, 2019! And look at the gorgeous cover!

As the surrogate to Princess Renya, Astrid lives amongst royalty. Her life, however, is far from privileged. If Renya steps out of line, Astrid is the one who gets whipped. It’s a nightmare, but Astrid has no choice—she and her family are Outsiders, the lowest class of people, without magic or citizenship.

The only way out is to compete in the deadly Race of Oblivion. First, racers are dosed with the drug Oblivion which wipes their memories. Then they awake in the middle of nowhere with a slip of paper containing the race’s first clue. Whoever finds the clues first and crosses the finish line wins. That’s the only rule—racers have killed each other in pursuit of the next clue, and the punishing terrain kills even more of them. For Astrid, competing could mean death. But winning could mean freedom.

Bonus Content
I’m loving this novel aesthetic collage from Julie! Each picture in the collage represents a place Astrid passes through in the Race of Oblivion. I can’t wait to read it!

SCAVENGER HUNT POST

For this year’s fall YA scavenger hunt, I’m thrilled to be hosting fellow New Zealander Kelly St. Clare! When Kelly St. Clare is not reading or writing, she is lost in her latest reverie. Books have always been magical and mysterious to her. One day she decided to start unravelling this mystery and began writing.
The Tainted Accords was her debut series, and her second series, The After trilogy, is now available.
A New Zealander in origin and in heart, Kelly currently resides in Australia with her soon-to-be-husband, a great group of friends, and some huntsman spiders who love to come inside when it rains. Their love is not returned.

Fantasy of Frost by Kelly St. Clare

I know many things. What I am capable of, what I will change, what I will become. But there is one thing I will never know…

The veil I’ve worn from birth carries with it a terrible loneliness; a suppression I cannot imagine ever being free of.

Some things never change…

My mother will always hate me. Her court will always shun me.

…Until they do.

When the peace delegation arrives from the savage world of Glacium, my life is shoved wildly out of control by the handsome Prince Kedrick who, for unfathomable reasons, shows me kindness.

And the harshest lessons are learned.

Sometimes it takes the world bringing you to your knees to find that spark you thought forever lost.

Sometimes it takes death to show you how to live.

Exclusive Content

YASH is all about exclusive content and Kelly’s offering up a cover reveal! I love book covers so can’t wait to show y’all the cover of Olandon, the second Tainted Accords novella.  Olandon releases February 2018, and is the second part of a companion novella series to The Tainted Accords.

Ready…..

SCAVENGER HUNT POST
I’m excited to be hosting Cat Winters in this Spring’s YASH. Cat Winters is an award-winning, critically acclaimed author of fiction that blends history with the supernatural. Her young adult works include IN THE SHADOW OF BLACKBIRDS, THE CURE FOR DREAMING, THE STEEP AND THORNY WAY, and the forthcoming ODD & TRUE (Sept. 2017). Her adult novels are THE UNINVITED and YESTERNIGHT. She has been named a Morris Award finalist, a Bram Stoker Award nominee, and an Oregon Spirit Book Award winner, and her books have appeared on numerous state and “best of” lists.

Odd & True

Trudchen grew up hearing Odette’s stories of their monster-slaying mother and a magician’s curse. But now that Tru’s older, she’s starting to wonder if her older sister’s tales were just comforting lies, especially because there’s nothing fantastic about her own life—permanently disabled and in constant pain from childhood polio.

In 1909, after a two-year absence, Od reappears with a suitcase supposedly full of weapons and a promise to rescue Tru from the monsters on their way to attack her. But it’s Od who seems haunted by something. And when the sisters’ search for their mother leads them to a face-off with the Leeds Devil, a nightmarish beast that’s wreaking havoc in the Mid-Atlantic states, Tru discovers the peculiar possibility that she and her sister—despite their dark pasts and ordinary appearances—might, indeed, have magic after all.

Exclusive Content

My upcoming YA release, ODD & TRUE (Abrams, Sept. 2017), is a tale of two Edwardian sisters, Odette and Trudchen Grey, known as Od and Tru. Older sister Od has always told Tru elaborate stories about their past and insists they’re descended from monster hunters. Tru now realizes that her sister has been using these tales to protect her from the pain of their family’s secrets.

Here’s your exclusive chance to learn a little more about my two fictional sisters. Meet Od and Tru . . .

ODETTE GREY

Nickname: Od

Birthdate: February 28, 1890

Age: 18

Favorite childhood pastime: Collecting legends and monster stories from neighbors and local townsfolk.

Greatest fear: Reality.

Biggest obstacle: The aunt who raised the two girls sent Od away from the family farm when she was just sixteen years old and banned her from seeing Tru ever again.

Biggest secret: Od refuses to tell her sister why she was banished.

What Od wants most: Thanks to her magician uncle’s tarot cards, Od has believed from her earliest years that she’s destined to embark upon an epic quest to hunt monsters with Tru. What she wants most of all is to return to her sister and steal her away from their aunt for this foretold adventure.

What you’ll find in the chapters written in Od’s POV: The truth about Od’s past, starting from the day of her sister’s birth up to the point in time when she returns home to fetch Tru.

TRUDCHEN GREY

Nickname: Tru

Born: January 14, 1894

Age: 15

Favorite childhood pastime: Listening to Od’s stories and drawing pictures to illustrate the legends and folk tales they collected from neighbors.

Greatest fear: Losing her sister.

Biggest obstacle: Tru is a survivor of childhood polio and uses a leg brace, a cane, and a wheelchair. She doesn’t see how she could be destined for an epic adventure.

Biggest secret: For fun, she attempts to read tea leaves to divine the future, and just recently she’s started seeing a strange, monstrous figure in the leaves.

What Tru wants most: Tru longs for her sister to return to her and tell her the truth about who they are and what happened to their parents, whom they haven’t seen in thirteen years.

What you’ll find in the chapters written in Tru’s POV: A hunt for monsters both figurative and real.

————————-

Don’t forget to enter the contest for a chance to win a ton of books by me, Cat, and more! Don’t you love the sound of Odd & True? I’ve added it to my TBR!

To enter, you need to know that my favorite number is 11.  That’s right, 11. Add up all the favorite numbers of the authors on the Red Team and you’ll have the secret code to enter for the grand prize!

Behold the Awesome: International Covers of Bestselling Young Adult Books

In addition to being an author, I’m also a blogger over at BookBub. I recently did a post for them about international covers for bestselling books, and as a person completely obsessed with book covers (book covers are art!), I thoroughly enjoyed compiling the images for the article. The article got me pondering what international covers look like for some of my favorite YA novels and one thing led to another and suddenly I was compiling images in canva.com to share on my blog. Take a look at these international beauties!

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

Not sure which is my favorite. Maybe the first international one. Number three looks like a Jodi Picoult novel.

Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi

The US cover is my fave! Followed by the third of the international covers. Number four seems too scifi.

Saint Anything by Sarah Dessen

None of these covers captures how good the book is, imho:)

Simon versus the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

The second international cover rocks my world for some reason, but I also love the US version!

The third international cover for the win! It’s so bright and shiny!  If you haven’t read this book you need to! It is one of the best books I’ve ever read!

Angelfall by Susan Ee

I love the third international cover! The fourth one looks like an MG novel to me.

Cinder by Marissa Meyer

Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

I love this green cover with the dragon eye!

Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

Wow, these are so very different from the US version in tone. The US one is starkly beautiful by comparison. That said, I kinda love the international one in the middle!

Shatter Me by Tahareh Mafi

I love the US version! Gorgeous and so much better than the original one with the girl in the white dress.

I think I like the international covers for The Thousandth Floor more than the US one. The US one seems a bit bland by comparison.

Scythe by Neil Shusterman: A Review

img_4010

Publisher’s Synopsis:

Two teens must learn the “art of killing” in this Printz Honor–winning book, the first in a chilling new series from Neal Shusterman, author of the New York Times bestselling Unwind dystology.

A world with no hunger, no disease, no war, no misery: humanity has conquered all those things, and has even conquered death. Now Scythes are the only ones who can end life—and they are commanded to do so, in order to keep the size of the population under control.

Citra and Rowan are chosen to apprentice to a scythe—a role that neither wants. These teens must master the “art” of taking life, knowing that the consequence of failure could mean losing their own.

Scythe is the first novel of a thrilling new series by National Book Award–winning author Neal Shusterman in which Citra and Rowan learn that a perfect world comes only with a heavy price.

Amazon/Goodreads

My Review:

Scythe is my first book by Neal Shusterman and it won’t be my last! In a world where disease, war and natural deaths are a thing of the past, the Scythes help keep the population down to a manageable size in an otherwise immortal world. The novel’s main characters, Citra and Rowan, are scythes in training and face a harrowing road as they learn to become sanctioned killers, as the best candidates for Scythedom are those who take the least enjoyment from the job. Citra and Rowan quickly learn that not all Scythes are created equal as a fissure in the organization threatens the very fabric of their narrowly balanced society. With a plot that will keep you on your toes, engaging characters and loads of philosophical questions about mortality to engage your mind, Scythe is a seriously fun and fast read.

Verdict: An elegant sci-fi tale perfect for those who want to ponder the bigger life questions while still having a rip-roaring good time.

Have you read Scythe? What’d ya think? What should be my next Shusterman novel?

The 20 Books I Can’t Wait to Read in 2017!

A new year means a slew of new books to add to the TBR pile! Here are the top 20 new books I can’t wait to get my hands on this year! I’ve got contemporary, thrillers, fantasy, dystopians and sequels galore. My goal this year…to read 100 books!

The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli

5139zwihtyl-_sy346_Seventeen-year-old Molly Peskin-Suso knows all about unrequited love. No matter how many times her twin sister, Cassie, tells her to woman up, Molly can’t stomach the idea of rejection. So she’s careful. Fat girls always have to be careful.

Then a cute new girl enters Cassie’s orbit, and for the first time ever, Molly’s cynical twin is a lovesick mess. Meanwhile, Molly’s totally not dying of loneliness—except for the part where she is. Luckily, Cassie’s new girlfriend comes with a cute hipster-boy sidekick. If Molly can win him over, she’ll get her first kiss and she’ll get her twin back.
There’s only one problem: Molly’s coworker, Reid. He’s a chubby Tolkien superfan with a season pass to the Ren Faire, and there’s absolutely no way Molly could fall for him.

Now I Rise by Kiersten White

51e7vpkgnel-_sx329_bo1204203200_Lada Dracul has no allies. No throne. All she has is what she’s always had: herself. After failing to secure the Wallachian throne, Lada is out to punish anyone who dares to cross her blood-strewn path. Filled with a white-hot rage, she storms the countryside with her men, accompanied by her childhood friend Bogdan, terrorizing the land. But brute force isn’t getting Lada what she wants. And thinking of Mehmed brings little comfort to her thorny heart. There’s no time to wonder whether he still thinks about her, even loves her. She left him before he could leave her.

What Lada needs is her younger brother Radu’s subtlety and skill. But Mehmed has sent him to Constantinople—and it’s no diplomatic mission. Mehmed wants control of the city, and Radu has earned an unwanted place as a double-crossing spy behind enemy lines Radu longs for his sister’s fierce confidence—but for the first time in his life, he rejects her unexpected plea for help. Torn between loyalties to faith, to the Ottomans, and to Mehmed, he knows he owes Lada nothing. If she dies, he could never forgive himself—but if he fails in Constantinople, will Mehmed ever forgive him?

As nations fall around them, the Dracul siblings must decide: what will they sacrifice to fulfill their destinies? Empires will topple, thrones will be won . . . and souls will be lost.

Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of lions.

But becoming the Queen Crowned isn’t solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it’s not just a game of win or lose…it’s life or death. The night the sisters turn sixteen, the battle begins.

Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.

one-summer-with-autumn-cover

Seventeen-year-old Autumn Teslow arrives at her father’s job fair knowing she’ll never measure up to the perfect image of daddy’s little girl—her twin sister.

Wearing anger management issues like a second skin won’t help Autumn win her dad’s approval for the big trip she’s been planning—or meet his condition that she successfully complete a summer internship for college.

Autumn’s cool unravels when her sister lectures against disappointing the family again. And when a young, bearded guy steps through the crowd to settle the growing argument between siblings, Autumn lashes out, dubbing him a “Duck Dynasty wannabe.”

At Nineteen, Caden Behr is clueless as to why his man parts are threatened by the fearsome girl before him. He’d only come to find an intern for his recreational equipment company, not break up a girl-fight between two sisters.

Unfortunately, the only candidate left is the girl who just told him off. Without her, he’ll never prove to his CEO mother that he’s ready for more responsibility.

Autumn and Caden agree that if they can keep from killing one another, they can use one another to get what they want and then never have to see each other again. Which is what they want.

Until it isn’t.

Because despite her best efforts to scare him off, and his fading desire to push her into the lake, they’re beginning to enjoy the time they spend together. But pride is a hard habit to break. And if neither will admit their changing feelings, they could lose a whole lot more than one summer.

About-the-Author2

Julie_Reece_Image_3-253x300

As a child, Julie’s summers were about horseback riding and fishing, while winter brought sledding and ice-skating on frozen ponds. Most of life was magical, but not all. She struggled with multiple learning disabilities, and spent much of her time gazing out windows and daydreaming. In the fourth grade (with the help of one very nice teacher) she fought dyslexia for her right to read and won.

Afterward, she invented stories where powerful heroines kicked bad-guy butt to win the hearts charismatic heroes. And then she wrote one down…

Writing ever since, Julie weaves southern gothic, contemporary, fantasy, and young adult romances. She enjoys sweeping tales of mystery and epic adventure… which must include a really hot guy. Her writing is proof a dream and some hard work can overcome any obstacle.
